NFPA 80 Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives 2022

Safeguard openings in rated walls, floors, and ceilings against the spread of fire and smoke using the latest requirements in NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives.

In a fire event, compliance with NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, can make all the difference when it comes to occupant life safety and property protection. That is why this standard is referenced in NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®, building codes, and fire codes nationwide and around the globe.

Proper installation of openings in fire-rated assemblies is critical — and fire doors, fire windows, dampers, and other opening protectives must be inspected and tested periodically to ensure they remain in proper working condition and can help confine a fire should one occur.

If you are responsible for building fire safety, there is no substitute for the latest edition of NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives.

The provisions in this standard can help you ensure the proper installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire door assemblies, fire window assemblies, fire dampers, fabric fire safety curtains, and fire protective curtain assemblies. When changes in the industry occur, everyone needs to know — from manufacturers to designers, engineers, contractors, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), fire door inspectors, and building owners.

The 2022 edition of this standard includes several changes, including the following:

  • New provisions in Chapter 1 to clarify that NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, does not apply for labeled fire door assemblies in openings that are not required to be protected
  • New definitions for annual frequencycorridor damper, and trained rolling steel fire door systems technician
  • New listing requirements for fusible links and revised provisions for fire door signage
  • Relocation of job site preparation criteria from Chapter 4 to Chapter 5
  • New provisions for the inspection and testing of swinging fire doors with fire door hardware
  • Revision of Chapters 6 through 11 and Chapters 14 through 16 to provide consistent references to Chapters 4 and 5 for installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance

Further changes in the 2022 edition of NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, include a complete rewrite and reorganization of Chapter 7 and a number of changes to Chapter 19.

The changes for dampers in Chapter 19 include the following:

  • New requirements for corridor dampers
  • New listing requirements
  • Definitions relocated to Chapter 3
  • Revised acceptance testing provisions
  • Provisions pertaining to the installation of remote position indication functionality on existing dampers

From fire doors and fire windows to fabric fire safety curtains and dampers, the 2022 edition of NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, covers it all.
